"Shaping
surfboards can be as addicting
as surfing.
It's the search for the perfect
line, total flow, it's like the
endless search for the perfect
wave. As technical as possible,
in my opinion it's more of an
art form than anything else. The
only existing test labs are the
seas and the oceans and even as
accurate as we can be in our measurements
and comparisons with other board
data, it is in our creativity
that resides the capacity to transform
in reality, through our experience
and exhaustive practice, the shape
we create in our minds.
In essence, surfboard designers
are nothing more than toy makers,
modern Geppetos, whose biggest
reward is to see the huge smile
in anyone's face who just surfed
a wave with a magic board under
his feet." |

Paulo
Mandacaru started making surfboards
in São Paulo, Brasil, his homeland,
at age 17, testing them in Ubatuba,
one of the most famous surf cities
in Brasil.
Only
8 years later he changed
his "hobby" into his profession
and in 1987 headed to California
looking to develop and to
perfect his art form. Stayed
there for 2 years where
met and worked for some
of the most important names
of the surfboard industry
like Donald Takayama, Gary
Linden e Xanadu, among others.
Back to Brasil in 89, worked
for Linden's Brazilian branch.
In 91 moved to Portugal
where worked for one of
the biggest surfboard factory
in Europe, Polen Surfboards,
for more than 6 years.
In 1997 started his own
brand, PMD-Paulo Mandacaru
Design, spreading his boards
thru Europe. |
 |
With more than 11.000 shapes
produced, mostly by hand,
and surfers from all around
the world appreciating his
works, his name keeps growing
as a synonym of quality
and performance in surfboards.
It is difficult to find
a shaper who feels so at
ease in all different areas
of modern surfing, whether
it be shortboards, guns
or longboards.
Throughout the years Paulo
Mandacaru shapes were tested
and approved by some of
the best Brazilian, Portuguese
and international surfers,
such as:
- José Gregório (2 x portuguese
national champoin)
- Renato Galvão (brazilian
professional champion 2004)
- Hizunomê Bettero ( brazilian
top professional surfer
)
- Guga Gouveia ( portuguese
national champion )
- Justin Strong (south african
and european champion)
- João Alexandre "Dapin"
( EPSA european vice-champion
)
- José Seabra ( big rider

- Patricia Lopes ( 9 x portuguese

He is undoubtedly the
shaper that collected more
